Håkan’s random ramblings

I'm a sucker for visuals (and good music) like this

Simian Mobile Disco rocks away with awesome minimalistic visuals. Just imagine if you could enjoy them live! The vocals of the track could be skipped for all I care but the the rest of the track is ridiculously good as well!

How far can you take it?

Client scripting and Javascript is the way of the future, if you ask some people. While I don't want to take a stand in that fight at this moment I'm still very intrigued about what you can actually achieve in a mere 20 lines of code.

Check this out and I'm sure you'll be as impressed as me: http://www.p01.org/releases/DHTML_contests/files/20lines_hypno_trip_down_the_fractal_rug/

I admit - I'm white and nerdy...

It's time to come clean. I guess I'm kinda nerdy sometimes.

How else can I find this really amusing:
"Compiled Java class files (bytecode) start with 0xCAFEBABE. When compressed with Pack200 the bytes are changed to 0xCAFED00D."
- From Wikipedia

Come to think of it I'd say it's sort of the programming version of Aphex Twins Devil Face.

And Weird Al provided the soundtrack for us nerds.

Btw, am I the only one to see some slight resemblance with the small characters (mucklorna) in Sven Nordqvists Pettson & Findus?

My top 10 cloud applications

For me personally I see two main advantages with moving more of my computing, files and information to the web. One is that I work at different places and with different computers from time to time. Second is that I want to be sure my files don't disappear in oblivion if my computer crashes, burns up or gets stolen.

Hence, here is my favorite services that I use today:

1) Mozy (backup)
2) Gmail (email / spam-filtering)
3) Google Calendar (planning / reminders)
4) Google Reader (rss-reader)
5) Xdrive (storage) removed since I noticed they don't support unicode characters in filename
5) Dropbox (storage)
6) Ta-da List (bullet-lists)
7) Google Docs (office-suit)
8) Delicious (bookmarks / to-read-list)
9) Meebo (chat)
10) Vyew (screen-cast)

There are of course more (such as Google Analytics, Flickr, etc) but a top 10 is a top 10.

They're all free (or have a free version) except Mozy but I don't feel I can trust backup to a free service. And Mozy is very reasonably priced anyway.

So - now I'd like to know - what are your favorite cloud apps?

A note on pricing

The price for a product is about 10$.
Should the price tag read "$10", "$9.99" or "$9.80" ?

Pretty much the same result (ok, 2% down on the last one but I assume that is within margin).

As a customer I'd probably go for $10 or $9.80 in a general case where I don't know anything else about the seller. $9.99  feels too much like someone is trying to rip me off.

More on this here, http://www.37signals.com/svn/posts/1287-ask-37signals-how-did-you-come-up-with-pricing-for-your-products

Global hotkeys for Spotify

I just recently got an invite for Spotify. Trying it out I'm so far very pleased, but being used to Winamps Global Hotkeys-feature I was somewhat annoyed that this was not something Spotify supported in their player.

However, after some googling I found information that the player does support Media Keys (play/pause/volume/etc). To my frustration neither my computer at work, nor my private laptop, has any media keys.

More googling led me to a neat little program called Keyboard Remapper. Using this I now use F12 as "play/pause" and F11 as "next song".
